The Norman city walls were built on the foundations of those constructed by the Romans. The Dane John in the background is of undoubted antiquity but uncertain origin there is no reliable evidence for the source of its name.

A medieval city wall still runs along about one-half of the circumference of the old city, following the line of the 3rd-century Roman wall.
