Duddon and Eskdale valleys are both lakeless, but make up for this by their streams, which are like mountain torrents, crystal clear, with every stone visible from the stream bed.

Between the two valleys one can travel the renowned Hardknott Pass, alongside the road on the Eskdale side is the ruined fort of Mediobogdum, home of a Roman garrison almost 2000 years ago.
