The 16th and 17th century merchants' houses on Quayside near the River Tyne are part of a group of houses that still survive in the area known as Sandhill, the historic heart of the City, once thronging with markets and mercantile trade.

In the city centre is the 135 foot Earl Grey's Monument, built 1838, to commemorate the Prime Minister who passed the great reform act of 1832.
