Jesmond Dene is the most popular park in the City with an unusual past; the name itself requires an explanation; a dene is a local name for a steep sided, narrow river valley. Newcastle once had many but few remain today. The Church of St. Nicholas became a cathedral in 1882 on establishment of the diocese of Newcastle. A church of the same name was built on this site in Norman times.
