Nearby, Warwick has perhaps the most spectacularly sited and architecturally impressive inhabited castle in England.

The first castle on the site was reputedly built for Ethelfleda, daughter of Alfred the Great, in 916, but Ethelfleda's Mound, at the end of the courtyard, is probably entirely Norman.
