Carlisle is a beautiful historical town surrounded by many fascinating historical sites; Hadrian's Wall, Carlisle Castle, the Lake District, as well as many themed tours of the area.
Nearby the River Esk, once famed for its runs of sea trout and salmon, marks
the border with Scotland.
Carlisle Cathedral, begun by Norman builders, has many
grey stones from Hadrian's Wall mingled with the local red clay, more
recently archaeologists have found remains from the Viking era.
The Prominent and the the most important monument left by the Romans in Britain, is Hadrian’s Wall, which stretches the whole breadth of England from Solway Firth to the North Sea. The wall includes the Birdswold Roman Fort, from which a road led north to the outpost fort at Bewcastle which has some of the best Roman remains to found in this historic region.
Modern day Carlisle is the gateway to Cumbria, and a thriving city. It is well worth a visit, or a stop off for that extra day if en route to Scotland.
Carlisle has many attractions; excellent restaurants and cafe's with an abundance of good food and a wide variety of interesting shops.
Additionally there is plenty of entertainment and a vibrant nightlife all to be found around this graceful city.
