Chester is one of Britain's most beautiful historic walled cities. Situated in England's North West, its history spans back some two thousand years to Roman times.
The city has many such attractions,
as well as a wide variety of interesting shops, many located in Eastgate
street, where the famous double-tiered 'Rows' shops are situated.
Another of the pedestrianised thoroughfares through the centre of Chester, Bridge Street, contains the
famous double-tiered 'Rows' of St. Michael's Buildings, one of Chester's
most well-known landmarks. The building, completed in 1910, houses two rows of shops, and leads inside
into an impressive modern arcade with open cafe often serenaded by pleasant
live piano recitals.
Chester's sandstone cross was erected in the 15th century, marking the centre of trading and government within the city. It is said that this is the spot where the Romans first set up camp nearly 2,000 years ago, and evidence can be seen in the four principle roads that meet at this point.
The ancient office of Town Crier has been reinstated and proclamations are issued regularly from the cross.
Chester has many attractions; excellent restaurants and cafe's with an abundance of good food and a wide variety of interesting shops.
Additionally there is plenty of entertainment and a vibrant nightlife all to be found around this graceful city.
