Canterburyhas a rich history, dating back to Saxon times, when it was the main crossing point over the Great Stour river. Thomas Becket’s murderin 1170 led to the cathedral becoming a place of pilgrimage for Christians worldwide.

Canterbury's Norman city walls were built on the foundations of those constructed by the Romans.A medieval city wall still runs along about one-half of the circumference of the old city, following the line of the 3rd-century Roman wall.

Present day Canterbury is a thriving centre for the arts, and has lots to offer the visitor.
